Ecotourism Melanesias PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Some visitors are keen to visit parts of the country that tourists don't normally travel to. Remote locations are of course more difficult and a little more expensive to visit, but travellers to out-of-the way parts are often rewarded with a close-up experience of rural PNG and great photo opportunities.
To visit remote locations it is necessary to either walk a long way or to fly in light aircraft to scary bush airstrips, or take a long trip in a motorised canoe or dinghy.
MAY WE SUGGEST:
Wuvulu Island, Manus Province - excellent local handicrafts, exquisite island scenery, fishing and snorkelling, diving with perfect clarity, guest house accommodation. Travel by boat from Vanimo, Wewak or Lorengau, or fly from Vanimo.
Oksapmin, West Sepik (Sandaun) Province - just over the border from the Southern Highlands, a remote mountain station with sub-district headquarters and guest house, interesting local handicrafts. Accessable by scheduled light aircraft (MAF).
Lake Murray, Western Province - freshwater wetlands/savannah environment accessable by scheduled light aircraft (MAF).
Karawari Lodge, East Sepik Province - a large tourist lodge near Amboin, on the Karawari River. Remote location with creature comforts. Fly in fly out.
Woodlark Island, Milne Bay Province - a large island without air services. Travel in and out by boat - 2 days from Alotau. Excellent local carvings. Homestay accommodation.
Menyamya, Morobe Province - a district station with high school and health centre, but very far from the provincial headquarters at Lae. Lots of walking tracks around the area. Regular air services from Lae.
Arawe Islands, West New Britain Province - a scattering of small offshore islands with archaeological digs. Fly to Kandrian then go by dinghy.
Nissan Island, Bougainville Province - a Polynesian atoll halfway between Bougainville and New Ireland. Scheduled air services from Rabaul. Guest house accommodation.
