Kokoda Mountain View Lodge is a new rural tourist lodge built in 2004, owned by Jeff and Priscilla Ogomeni. Jeff and Priscilla are Kokoda locals who lived and worked in Townsville, Queensland for many years before returning to Kokoda to help develop local tourism. Their hospitality is a unique combination of Oro tradition with a strong Australian influence.
LOCATION: Kokoda Mountain View Lodge is situated in Kokoda township at the beginning of the famous Kokoda Track. Kokoda airfield is 30 minutes flying time from Port Moresby. Airlines of PNG operate into Kokoda twice a week. Map of Oro Province.
ACCOMMODATION: The lodge consists of a guest house building plus 5 bungalows. Eberything is constructed from local timbers with the customary grass roof. Each bungalow sleeps 5 comfortably and the 5th cabin sleeps 6 with a double bed and 2 bunk beds. Each cabin has its own verandah perfect for watching the daily sunrise and sunset. Mattresses, bed linen and mosquito nets are provided.
BATHROOMS: Bathing is a choice of outdoor shower with solar hot water bag, or jumping into the cool flowing creek nearby. Laundry is done by hand and this can be arranged for you. Toilets are of the sit-down flush variety. All facilities are shared.
MEALS: All meals are provided at the Lodge. You can expect plenty of fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, chicken, rice, fresh eggs for breakfast and yummy homemade bread. Cuisine is a mixture of local dishes and modern Australian style. Jeff and Priscilla formerly ran a catering business in Townsville so you can be sure that the food at their lodge will be professionally prepared.
OTHER GUEST FACILITIES: Telephone is installed but often not working. HF radio communication link with Port Moresby is available through the hospital for urgent communication.
DESCRIPTION: Kokoda township is nestled in a luscious green valley beneath the beautiful blue green Owen Stanley Range. The Kokoda valley has a wide range of native flora and fauna. The largest butterfly in the world called the Queen Alexandra Birdwing is mainly found in this part of Oro Province. Also various species of bird of paradise can seen in the forest near the township. There are numerous crystal clear rivers and creeks running close to the township where you can safely go swimming.
ACTIVITIES: Traditional dancing: local groups perform at the Lodge to the rhythm of the kundu drums. The colourful costumes are all handmade and dyed using local trees, shrubs and flowers. The dancers sing songs that have been handed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years: songs about hunting, gardening, find a good wife, songs about their daily lives.
Traditional feast: the Lodge organises feasts for guests. The foods are slowly cooked all day in the ground under hot stones (locally known as "mumu"). It takes all day to prepare the food, chop wood for the mumu fire, lay the stones on the fire to heat up and wrap and place food and stones in the ground oven.Ecotourism Melanesia in conjunction with Kokoda Mountain View Lodge offers Walk the Kokoda Track tours which involve one night at Kokoda and 9 nights along the Kokda Track.
For non-hikers, we have designed a Discover Kokoda and Oro tour (5 days 4 nights) which allows visitors to experience to legend of Kokoda and explore some of the rarely-visited WW2 sites around Popondetta, without actually walking the Kokoda Track.
