On arrival, you are met and escorted to the nearby beach to board your boat transfer to Kairiru Island, arriving in time for lunch at the Polen Guest House. Here, local villagers have worked hard to prepare a menu of cultural activities which both entertain and teach visitors about the culture of the wewak Islands (Kairiru, Muschu and Walis), through traditional singsings, music and drama. By day you will explore this scenic island, site of a Japanese military outpost in World War 2 and home to hot springs and explorable caves. In the evenings, the village cultural groups will fill the night with dance and song – and some very funny drama about courtship practices – on the lawns in front of the guest house. Ovenight Polen Guest House (includes local style meals).

Sepik artifacts
Day 9 At Kairiru Island. Late afternoon boat transfer to Wewak, dropoff and overnight Windjammer Beach Hotel (includes meals).
Day 10 Today, a full day excursion to the Sepik River. Departing from the hotel at 4am you will be driven four hours to Angoram on the Lower Sepik River. Here you will transfer to a motor canoe and travel up the Keram River to Chimondo, a tributary of the Sepik, arriving in time for lunch, a traditional Sepik feast prepared for you. The people here have established a village cultural centre which will be your base for the day as the villagers take you around their village, demonstrate their various customs and show how they carve artifacts to decorate their men’s spirit houses. Late in the afternoon you will return down river to Angoram where your vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Angoram, arriving approximately 10pm. The hotel will keep dinner hot for you.

Dali beach, Vanimo
Day 11 After a late breakfast, transfer to Wewak airport for your flight along the northern coastline to Vanimo. An overnight stay in Vanimo will be necessary to allow time to obtain a visa from the Indonesian consulate for your visit to Jayapura. Check in at the Vanimo Beach Hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon on beautiful Dali Beach right outside your front door. Swim or stroll along the beach, or explore the Vanimo chinese shops for the afternoon while your visa is being processed. Overnight Vanimo Beach Hotel (meals not included: pay as you go).
