Along the Hiritano Highway
after crossing the
boundary from Central Pro into Gulf Pro

Day
1: ROAD TRIP PORT MORESBY TO MAKARA
0800h depart Port Moresby by public transport (PMV truck), or private
vehicle, accompanied by a guide and a hamper of food and drink, for
a 4 hour journey north along the Hiritano Highway, crossing the boundary
from Central Province into Gulf Province and arriving at Makara Village
(just past the Terapo Bridge) around midday.
Spend the afternoon exploring tiny Makara Village and nearby Moveave
Village which is one of PNG’s largest villages. You will be shown
how the local staple food, sago, is cultivated, harvested and cooked.
Overnight Makara Village (homestay with your guide). Local-style
meals supplemented with dry rations.

Day
2: MOTOR UPSTREAM FROM MAKARA TO TAURI
Departing early in the morning and accompanied by two guides you
will motor up the Tauri River in an outboard-powered dinghy,
arriving
late in the afternoon at Tauri Village. Stop along the way to visit
riverside settlements and buy fresh fruit, view river birds and
maybe crocodiles.
In the evening
the village people will perform a sing-sing and other entertainment
for you.

Day
3: HIKE FROM TAURI TO APU APU
Hike downstream along the banks of the Tauri River to ApuApu Village.
Opportunities for birdwatching and examining local flora. Guides will
interpret the natural environment for you and explain traditional uses
of plants for medicines, building materials etc.
Overnight village homestay at ApuApu.
Overnight village hut, Ainonk village.

Day
4: HIKE FROM APU APU TO MAKARA
Leaving the Tauri River, hike south west today through lowland savannah
with two small hill climbs, balance along a log trail through a knee-deep
swamp and pass through verdant rainforest with a thick overhead canopy,
arriving at Malalaua township by mid afternoon. Your guides will arrange
public transport from Malalaua back to Makara.

5: ROAD TRIP MAKARA TO PORT MORESBY
Spend the morning at Makara: PMV transport to Port Moresby departs
in the afternoons. This will also allow you half-day leeway in case
of hiking delays.
Arrive Port Moresby with guide late afternoon/early evening. Dropoff
at hotel.
