MOROBE PROVINCE (Lae)

OUR BRIEFING

Morobe can be divided into two zones: Lae and “the rest of the province”.

Lae is largely a hot, dusty industrial city dotted with green oases such as the botanical gardens located in the centre of town, the Lae war cemetery and the Rainforest Habitat located at the university. The Habitat houses the largest collection of captive Birds of Paradise in the world as well as a variety of displays including tree kangaroos, quolls and other birds of all varieties in a lush tropical garden setting.  Accommodation in Lae ranges from top of the range at the Lae International Hotel to guesthouses and lodges, all offering quality service and affordable rates for what is offered.  The largest commercial crocodile farm in the southern hemisphere is located on the outskirts of Lae – guided tours are arranged on demand.

Lae is the last stop at the end of the highway connecting all the highlands provinces. The town has a lot of squatter settlements with a range of PNG ethnic groups.

Outside Lae, Morobe is a big and beautiful province with lots to offer. Great beaches, pretty little offshore islands, close-up wildlife and spectacular mountain scenery.
