GENERAL INFORMATION

Traveling the Okuk highway from east to west, Eastern Highlands is the first of the five highlands provinces that one passes through. It is a country of gently rolling grassy hillocks patched with scattered clusters of casuarina, pine, and eucalyptus trees set in a background of imposing blue and grey mountain peaks and ranges.

The highlands provinces, together with Morobe and Madang recieve their electricity from a dam located in the Anona valley near Kainantu. The dam (and power plant) is known as Yonki.

Renowned for producing some of the highest quality coffee in the world, Eastern Highlands is also home of the famous 'Asaro Mudmen', and the cane-swallowers of Bena, who can be seen among many other sing-sing and dance groups during the annual Coffee Festival and Goroka show.
